Hi everyone!
I’m Lapo Bartolini and I’m a 2nd year master student from Florence University, Italy.
I’m here in the STPP lab as a Special Research Student, and I’ll be staying here for six months to write my master’s degree thesis. The topic is to determine the feasibility of determining the internal structure of comets via tomography, carried out by two or more orbiting radars around them. If the conclusion is positive, I’ll have to determine the features of the radar system to accomplish that goal.
I’m not a geophysics scientist but rather an electronic engineer, so this thesis will give me the opportunity not only to study radar systems more in detail, but also to use them for a very peculiar application, and that to me is extremely interesting. Also, I’ve always been fascinated by the imaging techniques used in medicine, so having the chance to get a better understanding of tomography is a huge bonus to me. I really couldn’t be more excited!
Having talked about my research, I would now like to write a couple of words describing you my experience in this lab so far, humanly speaking.
I’ve been here for just over one month now, and I already met basically every student in this lab. Believe me when I say that I feel I couldn’t be any luckier. As a foreign student in a completely Japanese lab, I was ready to feel a little bit isolated: the language barrier was a big concern to me. I couldn’t be more wrong. Does everyone speak English like a fluent speaker? No. Do they try their absolute best? Definitely! Every time I’m in a room, everyone inside it speak English so that I’m be able to join the conversation. And the conversations are not just about research and work: every time we have a break – or go to lunch or dinner together – we talk about everything, from the smallest things to the biggest ones. I always learn something new every day, and grow fond with these people every day a little more. We already have many activities planned to do outside of the lab and I really can’t wait! I really feel at home in this lab.
So, if you’ll arrive in this lab before I leave, let’s take a coffee all together. Otherwise, just enjoy your stay in this lab (and in Japan in general). I’m sure it will be an experience you’ll fondly remember for the rest of your life.

イタリアのフィレンツェ大学から来た修士2年のラポ・バルトリーニです。
特別研究生としてSTPP研究室に来ており、修士論文を書くために6ヶ月間ここに滞在します。テーマは、彗星の周囲を周回する2つ以上のレーダーによるトモグラフィーを使って、彗星の内部構造を決定することが可能かどうかを調べることです。もし可能であるとわかれば、私はその目標を達成するためのレーダーシステムの特徴を調べる作業もする予定です。
私は地球物理学の科学者ではなく電子工学のエンジニアです。なので、この卒論を通してレーダーシステムをより詳しく研究することができるだけでなく、とても特殊な応用性についても学ぶことができる良い機会で、興味深いテーマだと思っています。また、私はいつも医療で使われる画像技術に魅了されてきたので、トモグラフィーをより深く理解する機会を得られることは、私にとって大きなボーナスです。これ以上の喜びはありません！
私の研究について話したところで、この研究室での私のこれまでの経験について、人間的なことを少し書きたいと思います。
私はこの研究室に来てちょうど1ヶ月が経ち、この研究室の学生全員に会いました。これ以上ラッキーなことはないと思っています。全員日本人で構成された研究室にいる留学生として、少し孤独を感じる覚悟をしていました。しかし、それは杞憂でした。みんなが流暢に英語を話す訳ではありませんが、皆とても努力して話そうとしてくれています！私が部屋にいるときはいつも、私が会話に参加できるように、皆英語で話してくれます。そして会話は研究や仕事のことだけでなく、休憩のたびに、あるいは一緒にランチやディナーに行くたびに、些細なことから大きなことまで、あらゆることを話してくれます。私はいつも毎日新しいことを学び、この人たちと毎日少しずつ好きになっいきます。研究室の外での活動もすでにたくさん計画されていて、とても待ち遠しいです！この研究室は本当に居心地がいいです。
もし私が帰国する前にこの研究室に来る人がいれば、一緒にコーヒーを飲みましょう。もしそれが叶わなくても、この研究室での（そして日本での）滞在を楽しんでください。きっと一生忘れられない思い出になるはずです。
